Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sedimentary breccia in the Jurassic of Utah, USA.

The Navajo Sandstone is a thick unit of Mesozoic-aged eolian sandstones that are ancient sand dune deposits. The Navajo is a prominent cliff-forming unit in much of western America. A minor lithology reported in the Navajo is limestone - thin carbonate horizons are present that represent interdune lacustrine deposits. This one consists of breccia with angular carbonate clasts, presumably formed by desiccation and cracking of the lake / pond sediments.

Stratigraphy: Navajo Sandstone, Glen Canyon Group, Lower Jurassic

Locality: trailside outcrop along Corona Arch Trail, north of Bootlegger Canyon & east of the Colorado River, west of the town of Moab, eastern Utah, USA
