Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On May 27, 2019, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of southern Brazil.

The image is centered primarily on the states of Mato Grosso do Sul (west) and São Paulo (east), which are separated, in part, by the wide Paraná River River. Near the lower left edge of the image and southeast of the Parana River, an intensely dark green patch marks the Morro do Diabo State Park. The park is home to the endangered black lion tamarin. This beautiful primate wears a fine mane of black fur and is one of the rarest monkeys in the world. Endemic to the forests of Brazil, deforestation has decimated all but about 3 percent of its original habitat, and this habitat is primarily in tiny fragments of forest. The Morro do Diabo State Park is likely the largest Atlantic forest remaining for this fascinating mammal.

Near the coast a large smudge of gray-brown marks the town of São Paulo. With a 2019 population estimated at about 12.18 million, it is one of the world’s most populous city. Not far from São Paulo are the headwaters of the Tiete River which flows to the northwest to meet the Parana. The Tiete is most easily seen well inland as it approaches the Parana.
