Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The brass padlock venerates Matsya, the first incarnation of Vishnu as fish on earth. Most revered Hindu god of preservation who saved Manu, founder of first human civilisation on earth, from deluge caused by Hagriva(sea-monster).

The Matsya padlock is reflective of the Newari people's belief in Hindu Mythology. But Kirtipur in Nepal, where this picture was taken, accommodates Buddhism alongside Hinduism.

Golden Fishes are part of Ashtamangala, the eight auspicious symbols in Buddhism. Generally, present in pair they stand for elongated eyebrows of Buddha. Symbols of happiness and freedom. Therefore, Newari home abounds in happiness, freedom and thoughts of preservation that lends it a stoic character.
