Description
English: Part of fossil sea cliff at Steigerberg hill: Permian volcanic rocks (Kreuznach Rhyolite) with Lower Oligocene (30 mya) coastal erosion features. The image apparently shows the eulitoral zone (smooth yellowish rock) and the supratidal zone (weathered reddish and greenish rock above). The rock above the supratidal zone (peritidal zone) has been eroded subsequent to sea level rise. Mainz Basin, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany[1]
Deutsch: Teil des fossilen Kliffs am Steigerberg: Permisches Vulkangestein (Kreuznacher Rhyolith) mit im Unter-Oligozän (30 mya) entstandenen Küstenerosionserscheinungen. Das Bild zeigt anscheinend das Eulitoral (gelblicher glatter Felsen) und das Supratidal (rötlicher und grünlicher verwitterter Felsen darüber). Der Fels oberhalb des Supratidals (Peritidal) wurde nach einem Meeresspiegelanstieg erodiert. Mainzer Becken, Rheinland-Pfalz[1]
