Title
Bracelet fragment
Description
English: A fragment of a Roman copper-alloy strip bracelet, probably dating to c. AD 350-410. The fragment is very broadly sub-rectangular in plan, tapering from a patinated break into a forward facing, and potentially similarly truncated, blunt hook and is curved in profile. The strip is shallowly plano-convex (D-shaped) in cross section, with a convex outer surface. The outer face of the bracelet is ribbed, with a series of 25 rounded transverse mouldings, each separated by an incised groove. A thicker, more pronounced transverse collar deliniates the hooked terminal, with the broad end terminating in a plain facet, with the suggestion of a truncated incised chevron or lozegiform feature. The interior is plain.

The fragment measures 45.4mm in length, 6.5mm wide and 2.1mm thick at the wide terminal and 3.1mm wide and 1.4mm thick at the narrow terminal. The decorated field on the outer surface is 5.2mm from the break at the narrow end and 5.5mm from the break at the wide end. It weighs 3.56g

Swift (2012: 171-172) suggests that multiple motif bracelets such as this can be dated from c. AD 350 to the early fifth century. Crummy (1983:45-46) publishes similar bracelets dating to late Roman contexts, cf. no. 1730 and especially no. 1688, both from contexts dated to c. AD 320-450.
