He soon outstripped allbut the savage little black mare, who was running easily.Side by side the two horses moved as if in harness, butRanees Ladrone pulled hard at the bit, showing thathe was capable of more speed. Lincoln was close be-hind. The herd dropped awav and was lost. Ranee,lifting his short-handled whip, and swirling the long lashround his head, brought it down across the mares back,yelling like a Sioux. The mare seemed to flatten out like a wolf, as she letout the last link of her speed. Lincoln could see theveins come out on her neck, and could hear the roaringbreath of his own Rob Rov. The muscles along thespine and over the hips of the mare heaved and swelled,as Ranee again raised the whip in the air, and brought itdown along the mares glossv side. She did not respond.She had reached the limit of her stride.
