box for 1851 Exhibition Medals - NZ Presentation Set Exhibition held at Crystal Palace, Hyde Park

To boost trade and enterprise, New Zealand has regularly exhibited in many of the World expositions beginning with The Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. Queen Victoria (1837-1901) captured her public and dominion’s imagination, and, along with her husband Prince Albert (1819 – 1861), who was one of the Great Exhibitions’ foremost promoters, they were avid patrons of the arts and design. Objects on display came from all parts of the world that constituted the new empire, including recent settlements, such as Australia and New Zealand. Examples of the young colony’s resources and manufacture were shown at the Great Exhibition. This exhibition, and others to follow, presented New Zealand with opportunities to present technological development and products of the growing economy, and would become expressions of New Zealand’s economic position, national identity and pride. This presentation set of 1851 Exhibition Medals was presented to Sir George Grey acting on behalf of the Colony of New Zealand for our contribution to the displays.
