English: Princess Mary Gift box, 1914, WW1 Belonged to 4-592 Cpl. Sydney Webb, NZ Engineers Div. Sigs, 1NZEF brass tin with a double-skinned hinged lid; surface of lid depicts head of Princess Mary in the centre surrounded by a laurel wreath and flanked either side by monogram "M"; at top a decorative cartouche contains the words 'IMPERIUM BRITANNICUM' with a sword and scabbard on either side; at the lower edge a decorative cartouche contains the words 'CHRISTMAS 1914' flanked by the bows of battleships forging through a heavy sea; in the corners are small roundels with the names of allies- 'BELGIUM - JAPAN - MONTENEGRO - SERVIA'; and on either side roundels with 'FRANCE' and 'RUSSIA' superimposed on three furled flags or standards

Notes Princess Mary Gift Box, WW1 Princess Mary gift box, belonged to 4-592 Cpl. Sydney Webb, NZ Engineers Div. Sigs, WW1 Donor, Mrs Upton is the widow of S.Webb The box originally contained card and gift items such as cigarettes, chocolates, pencil in .303 cartridge case, etc. Sydney Webb enlisted as a Sapper with the NZ Field Engineers aged 23 years, and went on to serve in Egypt, Gallipoli and Western Europe. Little is known about him – he enlisted from Invercargill, was a watchmaker by trade and served for 4 years, 175 days. He is n now best known for the photographs he took on Gallipoli probably using a Vest Pocket Kodak. In a small album Webb documents the landscape and life of Gallipoli. In subjects ranging from making dinner, getting a hair cut and the rum issue to general views of bivvies and soldiers, he offers an insight into the daily lives of soldiers on Gallipoli.
