Summary
[edit]DescriptionBowood House (48006685523).jpg | Bowood House, Wiltshire, 30 June 2019. The main house 'The Big House' House was demolished in 1956 and all that remains is the subsidiary 'Little House', orangery and stables. The House was built in 1725 and extended by the 1st Earl of Shelburne in 1754. The 2nd Earl of Shelburne as Prime Minister, negotiated the Peace of Paris with the new United States after the American War of Independence. For this he was created the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne and the House is still the seat of the Lansdownes. Pictured is the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Priestley, Lord Lansdowne's Librarian and tutor to his sons. In this tiny room he discovered oxygen in 1774. In 1794 he emigrated to Pennnsylvania to continue his research. In addition, the Dutchman Dr. Jan Ingen Housz, discoverer of photosynthesis and a pioneer on smallpox inoculation, worked here in the 1790's and he died in the House in 1799. |
