Title
Bow brooch foot
Description
English: A copper alloy Roman bow brooch foot fragment. The bow is straight and D-sectioned, and the rest of the brooch is missing due to old breaks. The remains of a triangular-shaped catchplate, perforated with a circular opening above a trapezoidal one, can be seen on the reverse of the bow foot, the base of which is squared-off. The outside edge of the catchplate is curved back at right angles to create a pronounced pin rest. The catchplate measures 18.25mm in length and 11.58mm in width at its upper edge, tapering to 4.53mm at its base. The brooch fragment measures 27.8mm in surviving length, 3.29mm in width, and weighs 1.91g. It may be part of a Colchester derivative type, ( see Hatcheston, fig.63, nos 63, 88).
