Title
Bow brooch catchplate
Description
English: A copper alloy catch-plate fragment from a Roman brooch of first century date. The rest of the brooch is missing due to old breaks. The base of the bow is triangular in section, and the catch-plate flares out to a triangular plate, perforated with a circle above a triangle. The outer edge curves inwards to form a strong groove to hold the pin. The catch-plate measures 32.79mm in surviving length, 15.08mm in maximum width, and weighs 2.64g. It resembles a Colchester derivative type, an example of which, with similar perforation, is illustrated from Hatcheston, see Blagg et al, 2004, fig.63, no.88.
