Title |
bow brooch BROOCH |
||
Description |
English: Almost complete tinned copper alloy Hod Hill brooch. Axis bar housed in two folded wings. Small notch between the wings for pin articulation. Traces of iron on the wings and axis bar, possibly from an iron pin. The head narrows from the wings to a wider lateral moulding with a groove below it. The bow flares out from this point into a sub triangular panel (the point of which is towards the foot) . At either side of the top of the bow is a sub-rounded knop. The panel of the bow is fluted - a groove running longitudinally either side of a central rib. The rib is crudely laterally notched. The point of the panel is truncated by another cross moulding and groove (similar to that at the head). The leg projects from this and is narrower. It is set back from the cross moulding. The edges are incurved before flaring out into triangular panel, the point of which terminates in a rectangular foot knob. There is an incised line framing the panel. At the back is a catchplate extending for about a third of the bow length. The catchplate has a circular hole. |
