Bow brooch (side) |
||
Description |
English: Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Dolphin or Polden Hill type, probably of 1st Century AD date. The bow is of ‘dolphin’ profile, but also has a spring mechanism of ‘Polden Hill type’ (Hattatt 1987, p6), probably originally with a small protruding claw at the back of the head of the brooch to secure the chord. The axis bar is still present and is made of copper alloy. The wings are plain except for a vertical groove at each end. The sides of the bow at the head have a low rounded moulding. The bow is of D-shaped cross section and has a vertical moulded groove, opening to a V-shape at the head. The catch-plate is complete, and meets the end of the bow in a rounded knobbed foot. The pin is broken. |
