Title |
Bow brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete and worn copper-alloy unusual Roman Colchester bow brooch. It is missing the majority of the hook, the spring, pin and part of the catch plate due to old breaks, now worn.
The wings are rectangular, short and flat. They are separated at their centre by the remains of an integrally cast rectangular hook. The bow is a flattened D-shape in section and tapers to a sharp pointed foot. The front face of the bow is decorated with two central longitudinal grooves. On the back face of the foot are the remains of an integrally cast catch plate that is triangular in form. Both faces of the catch plate are decorated with incised rocker decoration. This brooch measures 36.93mm in length, 14.90mm in width at wings, 9.59mm in width at bow, 1.96mm in thickness at bow, 4.80g in weight. There are similar examples published by Mackreth (Mackreth, 2011, Volume 2, p.28, plate 25, no.578). |
