Title
Bow and Fantail Brooch from Swinhope
Description
English: Copper alloy

Brooch. Cast Bow and Fantail Brooch. Tubular wings retain the axis bar for a hinged pin (lost), and are surmounted by the stub of a loop. A thin bow, perhaps straightened by post-deposition damage, broadens to form a fantail with a broken back scroll and lozenge motif; this would be apt to retain enamel, though no trace of colorant remains. A parallel is published from Owmby, Lincolnshire (Hattatt 1987, no. 815), and others have recently been reported. The stub of a catch-plate remains on the reverse. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-200.

Length: 38mm, Width: 14.3mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 3.6mm, Weight: 3.72gms.
