Title
Bovine Mount
Description
English: An incomplete cast late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy caprine vessel or bucket mount dating to the first century AD.

Most of the goats head remains, one horn is missing. The mount is largely sub-oval in shape and D-shaped in cross section. The front face of the mount is elaborately decorated. The remaining horn projects diagonally to the rear and is roughly 7.5 mm long, it is cylindrical in section and tapers to a blunted point. The top of the mount are decorative forelocks consisting of a raised triangle with rounded edges and central incised line and small recessed pits.
Slightly below, on each side of the mount is a single circular recession representing humanoid eyes. Aligned with the eyes and at the side of the mount are the ears, formed of undecorated semi-circular projections, one has some corrosion to one edge. At the opposing end of the mount, to the horns is the goats nose. The nose is represented by two large circular flared recessions at the side of the mount.
The nostril recessions are slightly larger than the eyes, they differ further from the eyes by having a raised circular rib surrounding them. The rear of the mount is undecorated and has an oval recession.
Length: 27 mm
Width: 19 mm
Weight: 6 g

A direct parallel to this mount has not been found, there are no other caprine bucket/vessel mounts on the database to date, although there are many other bovine mounts on the database including: <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/445606">NARC-8DC867</a> <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/823096">WMID-E335EB</a> and <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/944927">SWYOR-F97CD7</a>.
