"BOUTCHA.
"This is a palanquin of Hindoo invention, and known in the country time out of mind. It resembles our sedan chairs, and is ornamented with copper like all the old furniture of the Hindoos. Copper is their favourite metal; the use of it is prescribed in their religious institutions, which gives it a preference in their eyes above gold and silver. But after all, the Boutcha has no pretensions to magnificience; it is without any sort of painting: they are satisfied with a simple coat of oil on the wood, which gives it all the lustre of a varnish.

"It is to be remarked that the Boutcha is much used by the Portuguese. It is well known that under this name are comprised the descendants of the Portuguese who settled in these countries some centuries back, who are now as black as the Caffries of the Mosambic, and spread all through India, where they are not much respected. Almost every house inhabited by this race of men has its Boutcha; and if they are in any sort of affluence, they seldom appear abroad without it."

Il ressemble beaucoup a nos chaises a porteurs, et il a des ornements en cuivre comme tous les anciens meubles des Hindous. Le cuivre est leur metal favori; l'usage en est prescrit par leurs lois religieuses; aussi l'emploient-ils de preference a l'or et a l'argent. Du reste le Boutcha n'est point somptueux; on n'y voit meme aucune espece de peinture; mais on se contente d'en enduire le bois d'une couche d'huile qui le rend aussi reluisant que s'il etait couvert de vernis.

"Ce qu'il y a de remarquable, c'est que le Boutcha est tres en usage chez les Portugais. On sait que l'on comprend sous ce nom les descendants de ces Portugais qui s'etablirent dans ce pays il y a quelques siecles. Cette race d'hommes, noire comme les Cafres de Mosambique, est tres repandue dans tout le territoire de l'Inde, et n'y jouit d'aucune consideration. C'est chez cette race que l'on trouve le plus frequemment le Boutcha; presque chaque maison habitee par des Portugais en a un; et pour peu qu'ils soient aises, ils ne sortent qu'en Boutcha."
