Summary
[edit]DescriptionBourne House, West Street, Bourne, Lincolnshire (geograph 4259182).jpg |
English: Bourne House, West Street, Bourne, Lincolnshire Bourne House, West Street, Bourne, Lincolnshire
The imposing Regency mansion at No 46 West Street is Bourne House, built in 1830 by the Bell family of solicitors, and now Grade II listed. The last to live there was Major Cecil Walker Bell who held many public offices but when he retired and left the town in 1940, the house was bought by Kesteven County Council and used as dormitory accommodation for evacuees from Hull. After the war, the council converted the building into a home for problem children, orphans or those from broken homes when it became known as Bourne Hostel. The hostel closed in 1985 when it was acquired by property developers who turned it into a complex of retirement flats and maisonettes in 1988-89 and it remains an attractive part of the street scene. |
