Title
English: Bound Print, Dessein de l’illumination et du feu d’artifice donné à Monseigneur le Dauphin à Meudon le 3e septembre 1735 (Design of the Illumination and Fireworks dedicated to His Grace the Dauphin at Meudon, September 3rd, 1735), 1756
Description
English: Exterior view of the gardens of the Palace at Versailles during a fireworks display for Louis XV, King of France. An arched colonnade trellis with two three-tiered fountains at left and right; ornately fashioned topiaries and plants in the other intervals, with a tree upon a pedestal at the center back. Within the semi-circular stage, a man wearing an animal skin slays two fantastic beasts with a large club. His left foot steps on the dragon at left, from whose mouth emits trails of smoke. (Figures are larger than life, possibly a sculptural group depicting one of the trials of Hercules.) In the background, a large circle of light at lower center, with arcs of fireworks spiraling out in all directions, illuminating the treetops at either side. In the foreground, an audience of figures—the male and female spectators sit on wooden chairs and stand in groups watching the display.
