In Beaune (after leaving Patriarche). After walking past the ramparts around the north east corner of the town centre, we went back into the centre of the town via Rue du Château. We were heading towards the Hôtel-Dieu.
Boulevard Maréchal Joffre
Constructed probably around 1465, the Blondeau Tower is built on a horseshoe-shaped plan and contains a beautiful central pillared vault. It was once called "Tour du Quarreau". From there you could see beyond the ditch the vast training ground of the Knights of the Arquebuse whose pavilion still exists in front of the Bastion Notre-Dame. The knights' shooting competitions brought together the neighboring companies in a great display of dressed costumes, and the winner received for a year the coveted title of King of the Oiseau. |
