Summary

[edit]
Description

In Beaune (after leaving Patriarche). After walking past the ramparts around the north east corner of the town centre, we went back into the centre of the town via Rue du Château. We were heading towards the Hôtel-Dieu.

Boulevard Maréchal Joffre

Bastion Notre Dame

Constructed during the Thirty Years' War (1637), it encompasses the small Notre Dame tower of the fourteenth century. At the tip of the bastion, on the boulevard side, a watchtower covered with a stone cap hidden by a tiled roof of the 19th century dominates the ditch. Giving, on the town side, on the Place Morimont, where the gibbet stood under the Ancien Régime, this bastion could resound with the cries of the tortured and the crowd.

The first execution recorded by the archives dates back to 1394. It seems that from the end of the eighteenth century the executions took place in Dijon, the seat of the Parliament where the trials were held.

A few steps away, on the rampart, you can see the rear exit of the old theater of the Comedie with the pediment adorned with masks and violins.
