Summary
[edit]DescriptionBoulder on hillside above Rhu - geograph.org.uk - 1301670.jpg |
English: Boulder on hillside above Rhu. The foreground boulder is about 1.6 metres long (along the line of sight), and about 1.2 metres wide. I chose to make this boulder the subject of a photograph, and to record its position, because some markings on its surface caught my attention; see 1301679 and 1301678 for further details.
There are more images at the British Rock Art Collection website: http://rockartuk.fotopic.net/c1785277.html As for the background of the photo, the promontory of Rhu is visible, jutting out into the Gare Loch on the near shore, directly behind the boulder (appropriately, the name Rhu, formerly spelled Row, is from the Gaelic "rubha", meaning "promontory"; the pronunciation, [ru:], of the place-name did not change, but "Row" was thought to be a confusing spelling). The Rosneath Peninsula is visible on the far shore of the Gare Loch. There, the jetty of the town of Rosneath (pron. "Rose", not "Roz") appears almost directly behind the tip of Rhu promontory. A bright group of buildings on the far shore, towards the right-hand edge of the photo, is clustered about the jetty of Stroul Bay (NS2583). On the skyline, in the right-hand half of the photo, beneath a white cloud, the distant chimney of the former Inverkip power station ( https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/714284 ) is just visible. |
