English: Bouddhanath, 11 kilometres from the centre of Kathmandu, is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Nepal. The white stupa (a mound-like structure containing Buddhist relics) dominates the skyline and with its massive mandala, is one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. Bouddhanath was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979. It is located on the ancient trade route from Tibet entering the valley to the North.
