Notes J Wilkie skittle bottle J Wilkie 1892-1904 (son of Alexander Wilkie who ran the Eden Cres aerated water manufactory from 1854 to 1867) James Wilkie established an aerated water manufactory in Chapel Street in 1892. Two years later he was contracted to supply much of the Auckland hotel trade (per J Endean Waitemata Hotel), and moved his business to 20 Stanley Street. Following J Wilkie’s death in 1904 his sons took over the business, initially as J Wilkie and Co and then as J Wilkie Bros, finally selling up circa 1908-9. The business was taken up in 1910, initially by the Auckland Aerated Water Co. Ltd, a company set up by a number of Auckland confectioners and grocers, but within the year the new firm was bankrupted and was sold to M-w Lichenstein and Arnoldson who moved the plant to Randolph St and operated briefly as Wilkie and Co. The following year J Endean re-established the business as Wilkies Ltd but again a short-lived venture which ended with the firm’s liquidation in 1912. The new owners, the ALVA Mineral Water Co then ran the business until 1955 and continued to use the Wilkie name for some years.
