Description
  • Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to Boston Light received by Benjamin Lincoln, Henry Dearborn and Henry A. S. Dearborn, in their capacities as Superintendents of Massachusetts Lighthouses, collateral to serving as the first three Collectors of the Port of Boston. Included are letters from Lighthouse Keepers Thomas Knox and Jonathan Bruce related to expenses and repairs, correspondence from Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin authorizing repairs and appointing a helper for the lighthouse keeper, and a copy of an Act of Congress authorizing funds for buoys. Also included is an 1811 report of the Boston Marine Society committee “appointed to examine the light house on the high land of Cape Cod.”
