in thepleasant square andshaded by lofty elms. The twin churches, asthe local title goes, arethe Unitarian (succes-sor of the original FirstParish Church) and theEast Church (Evangeli-cal Congregational),founded in 1834, whenthe great schism inNew England theologytook place. Betweenthem stands the TownHouse and at one sidethe high school. A finePublic Library of brickwith granite trimmings is near completion close by. Here we may take the car which has come around through CentralAvenue and now makes in a southeasterly direction for Randolph Avenue, which it follows for nearly a mile before the edge of the Blue Hills Reserva-tion is reached. Through the Reservation it runs for nearly two miles.Crossing the range between Chickatawbut Hill on the left and HancockHill on the right, one has a fine view over much of the chain of emi-nences. Great Blue Hill, away beyond Hancock, with the weatherobservatory and kite-flying station on its summit, being in plain sight fora considerable distance.
Text Appearing After Image:
Observatory, Great Blue Hill 134 MATTAPAN AND THE NEPONSET From near the twin churches Thacher Street runs northwesterlyfor about a mile (past the site of the house built in 1689 by the Rev.Peter Thacher, first minister of the town) to the Blue Hills Parkzvayof the Metropolitan system, which leads into the western (or GreatBlue) section of the Reservation. The trolley line, which runs throughthe parkway for a short distance, then, diverging, follow^s Blue Hill andCanton avenues south to Canton and Stoughton, furnishes a speedymeans of reaching the Great Blue Hill. The car leaves one at a pointwhere an easy foot path — cut through the woods from the old bridlepath to the summit — emerges upon Canton Avenue. It is a pretty walk along the broad and shaded parkway to the river, which here is spanned by a new stone bridge, built by the MetropolitanPark Board. Crossing it we are in Mattapan, the most southwesterlyvillage of the Dorchester District, Boston, whence w^e have a choice ofways
