Description |
Deutsch: Dido, Königin Karthagos, nimmt Aeneas auf, der auf der Flucht aus Troja in Afrika gelandet war. Während beide während der Jagd von einem Unwetter überrascht werden und in einer Höhle Schutz suchen, gestehen sie einander ihre Liebe. Als Aeneas Karthago wieder verlassen muss, stürzt sich Dido in sein Schwert und begeht Selbstmord, nicht ohne zuvor ewige Feindschaft zwischen Karthago und den Nachfahren des Aeneas beschworen zu haben. |

Object history | Das Gemälde wurde 1646 im Auftrag des niederländischen Statthalters Frederik Hendrik van Oranje-Nassau (1584-1647) als Kaminstück für den großen Saal des Haager "Oude Hof" (heutiger Paleis Noordeinde) für 1.000 Gulden gemalt. Als Teil der "Oranischen Erbschaft" gelangte das Gemälde 1747 in die preußischen Sammlungen nach Berlin und wurde unter Friedrich dem Großen in die Hängung der Bildergalerie des Berliner Schlosses integriert. In der Zwischenzeit war das Wissen um das Thema der Darstellung verloren gegangen. Man deutete die Darstellung als "Prinz von Oranien nebst Gemahlin" bzw. als "Zwei Verliebte". Seit den Publikationen des Galerieinspektor Gottlieb Puhlmanns ab 1790 galt es als "Hochzeit des Großen Kurfürsten mit der oranischen Prinzessin Louise Henriette". Obwohl eine gewisse Porträtähnlichkeit vorhanden ist, ist diese Interpretation jedoch eher unwahrscheinlich. Erst Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde die zugrunde liegende Thematik "Dido und Aeneas in der Höhle" wieder erkannt. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
