born Achill Island and Vilnius respectively. Wilno was at that time in Russia, later Poland, later USSR, now Lithuania.Achill is one of my favourite places, quite stunningly beautiful but which has always been a net exporter of people. The name English is interesting; Walsh , another common Mayo name is a form of Welsh, as indeed it is pronounced in those parts. Zenon Gajbutowicz,, draughtsman of Heneage Street, E1,, naturalised 1961 www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/42254/page/375/data.pdf. More properly Święciany, or Švenčionys in Lithuanian NE of Vilnius on the border with Belarus today. I think it ought to be Stare Swienciany [old] not Staro.
