Faimly: Arecaceae (Palmae) 10-15 m tall trees. Stems unbranced, cylindric with scars of fallen leaves. Leaves arise on the apical part of the stem.fan shaped, 1x 05-0.8 m, petole thick and woody, Plants dioecious; Flowers minute , arise on 40-50cm long compound spadices. The leaves are used for thatching, and making of baskets. In olden days (Before the making of paper) the leavs are used as writing material like a paper. In India almost all the sacred books, literary works are available on the palm leaves only. Sap from the peduncles is collected in earthern pots and it is sold as toddy or Kallu in the villages. The pulp of the tender fruits and endosperm are also edible. Distribution: Native of south , southeastren asia. Common in the waste lands or on the way side. Photographed at Nellore. |
