English: An illustrated book of en:The Tale of Genji. It contains two "ink-line" (hakubyō) paintings. This book dates to the thirteenth century, but the images retain the style of Heian-period narrative painting from when the story takes place. Here, Ukifune reads a letter from Kaoru reproaching her for being unfaithful to him with Prince Niou. Finding herself entangled in a love triangle, Ukifune nervously faces her inkstone and brush as she considers how to reply. Artwork was lent to an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by the en:Museum of Japanese Art (Yamato Bunkakan). |
