Mount Rainieris south of the exposition grounds; to thenortheast are the Selkirk Mountains, and tothe west the snow-capped heads of theOlympics make a rugged outline againstthe sky. In the immediate foreground areLakes Washington and Union, on theshores of which the exposition is built.Over the narrow neck of land whichdivides the salt water from the fresh, PugetSound comes in from the ocean, a greatinland sea of itself, that lies between twomountain ranges and brings the commerceof the world to Seattles door. The Court of Honor, around whichthe entire exposition is built, is a beautifulcombination of architecture and symbolicsculpture, to which has been added the ALASKA-YUKON-PACIFIC EXPOSITION, SEATTLE 3

TheCourt of Honor comprises the ExpositionMonument, Cascade Court and GeyserBasin. The monument is a Corinthiancolumn, supporting an ornamental shaft,carrying an astronomical globe, showing thesigns of the zodiac, upon which is perchedan American eagle- The shaft is eighty feethigh and entirely covered with pure gold fromthe Alaska-Yukon territories. It required$7,000 worth of gold dust to decorate it. A4ysterious names — mysterious to thestudents of geography — have been appro-priately chosen to designate locations; for instance, Arctic Circle incloses GeyserBasin; to the west of it is the KlondikeCircle, very naturally close to The PayStreak, which is the street of small con-cessions and catch-penny devices, of thekind which, having proved such a successat Chicago, have been followed at all expo-sitions since.
