Nextto it is the new buildingof the Lackawanna R;iil-road, with its tall tower,and be.vond that theferry houses of the Erieand Pennsylvania rail-roads. The Twenty-thirdStreet ferry house of theNew Jersey Central isa two-story steel-framestructure, covered withcopper sheathing of orna-mental design. No stone, brick or cementwas used in its construction. It has afrontage of 100 feet and a total length ofabout 4.35 feet. Passing under the metalawning, or manjuise, that pro.iects beyondthe facade of the building, one enters acommodious lobby finished in quarteredoak. Here are the ticket offices, expressoffice, information bureau and telephoneand telegraph booths. Under each ticketwindow is a shelf raised just high enough

ENTRANCE TO MAIN WAITING ROOM. 14 THE NEW GATEWAY TO THE METROPOLIS. from the floor so thatpassenger can deposit hisvalise upon it withoutstooping when ijurchas-ing his ticket. This is alittle tiling in itself, butsignificant as indicatinghow the comfort of thetraveler has been consid-ered in the constructionof the building, even tothe minutest detail. Passing through tlielobby just described onecomes next to the mainwaiting-room, a spacioushall finished like thelobby, in quartered oak,and with a lofty, pan-eled ceiling. The set-tees and news-stand areof hardwood, harmoniz-ing with the interiorfinish of the room. To the right of thenews-stand a door leads to the womenswaiting-room, beyond which is a toiletwith walls of gray marble and floor ofterrazza, a kind of mosaic. At the oppositeend of the waiting-room is the menstoilet, which is reached by passing throughthe smoking-room. On the second floor ofthe building on a level with the upperdeck of tlie ferryboat is another waiting-room,
