When this coating of chalkhas been placed on the plate, it is leftto dry and harden thoroughly. Theplates are then kept in a dry place thatthe chalk ma\- become brittle. When anillustration is desired, the artist uses asharp pointed stylus in drawing thepicture in the chalk, cutting throughthe coating to the steel plate. The
