ts. In addition to this space the officesof each department contain ample facilitiesfor the temporary storage of current docu-ments. Space aggregating 50,000 square feet hasbeen reserved for future expansion. Por-tions of the ninth and tenth floors remainunfinished and smaller areas on other floorsmay be drawn upon for future use. The new building is two and a half timesas large as the one it replaced and containsthe space and facilities to handle the businessof the courts for fifty years. There are11,420,000 cubic feet of space in the build-ing. It costs thirty-eight and four-fifthscents a foot. Entering into the constructionof the building are 11,030 tons of structuralsteel, 14,000 tons of granite, 33,000 tonsof concrete and 6,000,000 bricks. Thismaterial alone exceeds 73,000 tons. This immense mass rests on 130 concretecaissons that extend to solid rock about 116feet below the street grade, the deepestcaisson being 121 feet. NEW COOK COUNTY COURT HOUSE, CHICAGO 15 are 450,000 cubic feet of concrete—in bulkalmost twice the volume of the Auditoriumtower. The building fronts 374 feet onClark Street and 157 feet each on Wash-ington and Randolph streets. The lowestfloor is that of the boiler room story, .-58 feetbelow the street level, and the highest pointof the roof is 218 feet above grade. Theold court house had a total area of five acres.The new structure has fourteen acres offloor space. There is one mile of corridors.In 1851 and again in 1872 the County ofCook entered into an agreement with thecity of Chicago by which it permitted thecity to erect its city hall upon the west half of the block with the right to its per-petual use so long as it is used for city hallpurposes. The city has begun the erection of a newbuilding which, when ccjmpleted, will forman integral part of the new courthouse, andthe two structures will become a unified andimpressive public edifice.
