AT the point where the Baltimore & OhioJ\ Railroad in its westward course meetsthe Ohio River, stands the most inter-esting and imposing prehistoric monumentin Central North America. This is the cele-brated Grave Creek Mound, consideredby archreologists as the most important incharacter, construction and contents, of thegreat systems of prehistoric works in theMississippi Valley. portions and graceful symmetry to theheight of seventy feet. It is 820 feet inbase circumference, with truncated summit,50 feet in diameter, the largest and mostsymmetrical mound in Central NorthAmerica. It is covered with forest treesand native shrubbery, presenting at thisseason the bright spring foliage and tenderwild flowers of early May. This mound was excavated some years
