e Civil War cotton was the onemoney crop. It could be kept easily, and money couldbe borrowed on it before the crop was raised. Owing tolack of quick transportation, scarcely any other crop hada cash value, but must be consumed at home. There wasin the South plenty to eat and little money, and cotton wasthe one crop that brought money. Hence arose the one-crop system and living by buying on credit from the localgrocery until the crop was raised. It is a bad system, butnot a necessary accompaniment of cotton farming, for muchcotton raising does not necessitate the raising of nothingelse. The one-crop system is merely a bad habit thatmay be broken by diversification on the part of the farmerand by a different credit system on the part of the localmerchant and banker. Farmer went to the merchantTo get some meat and meal;Merchant says to the farmer,Boll weevils in your fiel!The merchant got half the cotton,The boll weevil got the rest;The farmers wife had nothingBut one old cotton dress.*
