Title
Book fitting
Description
English: A Post-medieval copper alloy book clasp, probably dating to c. AD 1500-1650. The clasp comprises of a flat rectangular plate with a widely flaring attachment end, with five indentations. The plate terminates in a rectangular transverse collar from which projects a blunt, rearward facng hook. At the attachment end are five perforations arranged in two rows, with the upper two retaining separately made copper alloy rivets. The plate is perforated twice further, both on the longitudinal median line, the upper contained within a pair of stamped concentric circles, the lower retaining a copper alloy rivet which holds a rectangular back plate to the reverse in situ. The attachment end features incised longitudinal decoration, creating slightly converging fields filled with incised oblique lines. Three further incised radiate out from below the interstice of each perforation.

Dimensions: length 56.7mm; width 32.0mm; thickness 2.1mm; weight 8.57g.

The basic form is typical of book clasps of the early post-medieval period, as discussed by Margeson (1993: 74).
