Description |
English: A copper alloy book clasp, in the form of a rectangular strip of sheet metal, with a small tab curled round to make the hook. The sides of the plate have decorative curves and v shaped notches cut along them. The surface is also decorated. There are two rows of punched zig zags (made by a rocked scorper) across the shorter, hooked end and along the edges of the long sides. The opposite end to the hook has two sets of probably stamped concenteric circles. These borders enclose a central area of punched crowns. The reverse of the clasp is undecorated and there is no evidence for surface treatment like gilding. A book clasp excavated in Norwich (Margeson 1993 p74-5) has similar concentric circle decoration and zigzags and is dated 1550-1700. |
