Title
Book clasp
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy book clasp, measuring 41mm in surviving length. This book clasp has a flat, roughly oval centre, 10.8mm in length and 14.9mm in width, with a central circular hole, 3.8mm in diameter. This central circular hole would have allowed the book clasp to be fitted over a peg mounted on the cover of the book.

To one side of the central oval is a three-dimensional terminal in the shape of an animal’s head, measuring 12.9mm in length, 3.3mm in width and 6.7mm in thickness. The ears can be seen laid flat against the top of the head; the head tapers and the snout is elongated and has a rounded tip. Running horizontally through the middle of the head, from side to side, is a circular hole 3.2mm in diameter. This perforation would have probably originally have held a cord which would have made it easier to pull the clasp off the peg.

To the other side of the central oval is a trapezoidal lobe with a single projection at one corner. The edges of the object are now very worn, and so there are no surviving traces of any breaks, but it seems likely that there would have been another projection at the other corner and that both may have been joined by a bar onto which a strap would have been stitched. Surviving medieval books have leather straps attached to one cover ending in similar clasps which fit over pegs on the opposite cover.

The upper face of the oval plate, and the sides of the animal-head terminal, have traces of gilding, but no other decoration can be clearly seen.

This book clasp is medieval and late 14th or early 15th century in date.
