Title |
book clasp |
||
Description |
English: Cut and stamped sheet copper alloy book clasp, which would have been used with a similar hasp to secure the bindings for a book. The hooked end of the clasp would have attached to a rectangular slot in the corresponding hasp, and both fittings would be rivetted on to the leather strap to hold the book closed. Two iron rivets remains at either end of the clasp, one between two rivet holes which are surrounded by two concentric circles. The clasp has an ogival edge with two semi-circular indents, and the opposite end to the hook has a crimped edge. The outer face of the clasp has been stamped sunbursts alternating with scallop shells.
Bailey (1992) illustrates a similar example with the same arrangement of rivets and an indented edge on page 78, No.28, and another with sunbursts on page 72, No.9, which is dated to the 17th century. |
