Title
Book clasp
Description
English: A copper alloy book clasp dating from the Late Medieval or early Post medieval period. It is sub rectangular in plan with a flared end that has semi circular notches in the end. The flared end also has 3 large circular holes as decoration as well as two rivet holes that still have the copper alloy rivets in place. The clasp also has a central ring and dot pattern with another copper alloy rivet in the centre. At the other end, there is a wider rectangular terminal and a wide hook. The back plate is made from a thin single sheet of copper alloy. The clasp is 72.9mm long, 37.5mm wide and 11mm thick. It weighs 20.96gm. It has a warm brown patina. The clasp dates to the late Medieval to early Post Medieval period, 15th to 16th century. Ottaway and Rogers (Ottaway, P. and Rogers, N. 2002 Craft, Industry and Everyday Life: Finds From Medieval York York Archaeological Trust and CBA) illustrate a similar book clasp, No. 14480 and 15234. Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households; Medieval and Post Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey Excavations 1971-78 East Anglian Archaeology Report) illustrates other book clasps, Nos. 452 to 455, which are similar in overall shape, but not design. These are dated to 16th to 17th centuries. Another clasp of very similar design is WAW-D79FE2 on the PAS database.
