Title
Bone knife handle with copper alloy engraved top
Description
English: A bone and copper alloy knife handle dating to the post medieval period. The handle is cylindrical and is made from bone. At the base the handle is slightly recessed and the bone is discoloured suggesting that it was originally covered with a copper alloy plate cap. At the blade end of the handle, a rectangular strip of copper alloy is wrapped around the handle. It is engraved with the inscription +AVE MARI. A shield shaped slot to accommodate the knife blade is visible. The length of the handle is 88mm. The handle has a diameter of 17mm. The knife slot measures 12mm in length and 5mm in width.
