| Description |
English: Bolingbroke Castle, Old Bolingbroke The castle moat is about to be renovated, but before that takes place expert advice was called for to ensure that re-establishing the moat must not be at the expense of the habitat and surroundings. Today and other days, checking out the species of pond life in the moat and establishing its boundary has been taking place. Children were allowed to participate in the pond dipping and several species were found including crested newts. About 16 children, with their parents/guardians, visited the site today.
It can be seen here that vegetation is taking over the moat and before much longer it will silt up, dry out and the pond species, with the exception of waterfowl, die out. The Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire http://www.lincsheritage.org/ has secured £40,000 from WREN http://www.wren.org.uk/ to assist towards the re-establishment of the Castle Moat. English Heritage http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.1657 is also contributing and the Friends of Bolingbroke Castle http://www.bolingbrokecastle.com/ agreed to be the third funding partner with an agreed financial contribution of over £4000. |
