Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In 1861, gold was discovered in the Boise River Basin, setting off a gold rush in the region. In the five years that followed, the Idaho Territory’s gold output accounted for one-fifth of the nations output as a whole. Due to Idaho being such a remote region of the country, it was difficult to safely ship all of this gold to the mint in San Francisco. This led to Congress authorizing the construction of an assay office in downtown Boise. An assay office is a building set up to test the purity of gold in order to value it. After its construction in 1871, over $75,000,000 worth of gold and silver flowed through its doors until its closure in 1933.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 66000305.
