into the Champs-Elysees,where, not far away, loomed the Palais des Beaux-Arts, in which the Salon is annually held in March.The Avenue des Champs-Elysees, crowded as itusually is in the afternoons, was now jammedwith cabs, omnibuses, hand-carts, and all sorts ofmoving; vans, mingfline with the fashionable car-riages on their way to the Bois. The proletarianvehicles contained art,—art by the ton. The upperdecks of the omnibuses were crowded with artistscarrying their pictures because they could not affordmore than the three-sous fare. And such an assort-ment of artists !
