Summary
[edit]DescriptionBog oak - geograph.org.uk - 566935.jpg |
English: Bog oak One of the principal components of the detritus from the field in Cottage Fen, as elsewhere in general in the Fens, is bog oak. The land originally covered by oak forest was inundated, killing the trees: marshland developed, peat was formed and the remains of the trees gradually disappeared below the surface. Unlike other timber the oak survived the submersion. The fact that the oak was dead and standing before final and total immersion in the preserving peat is demonstrated by the presence of beetle larvae borings in the relict timber. Unlike the disordered heap shown here, the timber was dragged out from the fen still standing in its original position. |
