English: Handout of Boekenvrienden Solidariteit, Hilversum, circa 1935. Translation: Since 1 January 1934 our books have been published every month. They have already acquired many friends in a relatively short period of time. This is evidenced by the proofs of approval, verbal announcements and letters, which we received from numerous circles. We may rightly conclude that the goal that we set ourselves from the beginning was achieved. This goal is: at a low price, so low that anyone who can regularly spend a small amount for reading material can buy it, to publish good and tastefully executed books, books which represent the most important flow of our time and by its contents speak to the proletarian thinking and feeling. We want to come to this plan for the creation of a cheap folk library, independent of any political party or grouping, a library that is co-operated by writers and illustrators, who advocate social renewal, but keep their work free from party propaganda and political agitation and independently proclaim their views on life, society, and the struggle of the working class for its emancipation. As a final consideration, we want to give writers who, due to social relations, no opportunity to do so, a chance to publish their important work. The character of our book community: The explanation given above determines, among other things, the character of our book community. Not every work offered to us could be accepted. The criterion for assessing whether a book should be published was first of all the consideration of whether it had something to say to the reader that he could deepen his understanding of contemporary social and cultural problems and at the same time develop his proletarian sense of art, and in the second place the question whether the literary level was up to scratch. In other words, except for that, the artificial value decided. The profit element was switched off. The benefits that the company derives after deducting the necessary administrative expenses, benefited the quality of the books to be issued. We hope to continue along the path that has been taken and, through the above considerations, the direction that we will take further.

Deutsch: Flugblatt des Exilverlags Boekenvrienden Solidariteit, Hilversum, um 1935. Übersetzung: Bücherfreunde Solidarität – Unser Ziel: Unsere Bücher erscheinen seit dem 1. Januar 1934 monatlich. Sie haben bereits in relativ kurzer Zeit viele Freunde gewonnen. Dies belegen die Zustimmungsnachweise, mündlichen Anzeigen und Briefe, die wir aus zahlreichen Kreisen erhalten haben. Wir können zu Recht den Schluss ziehen, dass das Ziel, das wir uns von Anfang an gesetzt haben, erreicht wurde. Dieses Ziel ist: zu einem niedrigen Preis, der so niedrig ist, dass jeder, der regelmäßig eine kleine Summe für Lesematerial aufwenden kann, es kaufen kann, um gut und geschmackvoll ausgeführte Bücher zu veröffentlichen, Bücher, welche die Hauptströmung unserer Zeit darstellen und deren Inhalt die proletarische Denkweise und das proletarische Empfinden anspricht. Wir wollen den Plan einer preisgünstigen Volksbibliothek realisieren, die unabhängig von einer politischen Partei oder Gruppierung ist und von Schriftstellern und Illustratoren geführt wird, die für soziale Erneuerung eintreten, aber ihre Arbeit frei von Parteipropaganda und politischer Agitation halten, ihre Ansichten über das Leben, die Gesellschaft und den Kampf der Arbeiterklasse um ihre Emanzipation unabhängig zu äußern. Abschließend möchten wir Schriftstellern, die aufgrund sozialer Beziehungen keine Gelegenheit dazu haben, die Möglichkeit geben, ihre wichtigen Arbeiten zu veröffentlichen. Der Charakter unserer Buchgemeinschaft: Die oben gegebene Erklärung bestimmt unter anderem den Charakter unserer Buchgemeinschaft. Nicht jede uns angebotene Arbeit konnte angenommen werden. Das Kriterium für die Beurteilung, ob ein Buch veröffentlicht werden sollte, war in erster Linie die Überlegung, ob es dem Leser etwas zu sagen hatte, dass er sein Verständnis für zeitgenössische soziale und kulturelle Probleme vertiefen und gleichzeitig seinen proletarischen Kunstsinn entwickeln konnte. Und zweitens die Frage, ob das literarische Niveau auf dem neuesten Stand war. Mit anderen Worten, der künstlerische Wert entscheidet. Der Aspekt des wirtschaftlichen Gewinns wurde ausgeschaltet. Die Vorteile, die das Unternehmen nach Abzug der erforderlichen Verwaltungskosten erzielt, kamen der Qualität der herauszugebenden Bücher zugute. Wir hoffen, den eingeschlagenen Weg und durch die obigen Überlegungen die Richtung, die wir weiter verfolgen werden, fortsetzen zu können. |
