English: Watercolour painting by an unknown Burmese artist depicting 19th century Burmese life. Caption: "A walking funeral" The procession is led by a hpoongyee (or Buddhist priest). The young unmarried women bear offerings to the hpoongyee which will secure the dead person future benefits. At the rear of the procession is a "Saing Waing": a musical instrument consisting of 12 gongs inside a metal cage, which the player sits inside. |
