Summary

[edit]
Latin Gospel Lectionary
Title
Latin Gospel Lectionary
Description
Ivory for display. Court School of Charlemagne at Aachen, c. 800. This carving of Christ in triumph, surrounded by twelve smaller scenes and miracles from His life, was inset in the 18thcentury leather cover of a Latin Gospel Lectionary made c. 800 for the nunnery of Chelles, near Paris, where around that time Charlemagne's sister Gisela was abbess. A Lectionary is designed to be carried in solemn procession in church for the reading of the Gospel; the ivory (if original to this book) would have been appropriate for such veneration.
