Summary
[edit]DescriptionBnF MS Gr510 folio 69 verso - detail - Triumph of Joseph.jpg |
English: "And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt." (Genesis, 41:42-43)
The image recalls the Roman emperors' triumphs, with Joseph dressed in imperial garb, with vexillum and diadem and riding in a quadriga, as Pharaoh's subjects perform proskynesis. The scene was probably reminiscent of the scenes from the Constantinople court of the emperors of the Macedonian dynasty Detail from a Greek manuscript dated 879-883 AD and containing the homilies of Gregory of Nazianzus, now in the National Library of France.
